The establishment of Hortobágy Great Fishponds started in 1916. The fishpond system has been a nature reserve since the foundation of Hortobágy National Park in 1973. Its birdlife, including breeding and migrating species, is particularly valuable. In the last 35 years, nearly 300 species have been observed here, which makes the area one of the most important bird habitats in Central Europe.
The fishpond system is about hundred years old, its water system, ponds and industrial heritage is unique. Visitors can walk up to 5 kilometers along the inner dyke between the fishponds, making it easy to reach the more distant parts of the area. Next to the Lake Kondás visitors can walk on a 460-metre long boardwalk, and can take a look into the wildlife of the ponds from the hides along the path and from the watch tower.
The area can be visited on foot or by bike with a valid entrance card. There is also a nature trail on the main dyke. The information boards show the characteristic plants and animals of the fishponds, that can also be observed from several watch towers at various spots on the trail.
