Lots of birds, protected plants and grazing or wallowing buffaloes are waiting for those visitors who travel by the narrow gauge railway to the Hortobágy Great Fishponds. The train runs on a 5-km-long railway between the fishponds on the inner dyke making it possible to easily reach the distant parts of the fishponds. There are excellent opportunities for walking and biking in the nearly 2000 hectare fishpond system. Bird-watching towers, information boards and a boardwalk are among the available facilities. The fishpond area is internationally protected and it is one of the most well-known and famous wetland bird habitats. The outstanding aquatic birdlife provides attractions for all seasons for both beginners and advanced birders. The most spectacular event of the year is the autumn migration of cranes: in October, up to 40 thousand cranes roost simultaneously in the drained fishponds. The area can be visited on foot or by bike with a valid entrance card or by the narrow gauge train with a train ticket. Children can spend fun moments on our playground.
