Research

The Pentezug Reserve offers perfect conditions for researchers. All aurochs and wild horses can be individually identified. The parentage of each individual is established by genetic analyses conducted in the University of Davis for the wild horses and in a private laboratory in Germany for cattle. This information gives us the opportunity to study the social behaviour of the animals, control the level of inbreeding in both populations and it enables us to follow the changes in group structure and to record the dynamics within the different harems and bachelor groups.

Each year, several investigations are carried out on topics such as parasite load, hoof condition, social behaviour, feeding behaviour, hormone levels, metabolism, activity patterns, breeding success and group composition.
