Awakening nature

March is not only the time for our white storks to return, but the pond terrapin and the ground squirrel (also called souslik) also come out of their winter hideouts… at least here, in the Hortobágy Wild Animal Park. While terrapins are content to bask their time away in the spring sun, the ground squirrels are busy hoarding the food underground and their feeding trays are in constant need of a refill.  Winter and hibernation are finally over!

The pond terrapin was the reptile of 2014. It is protected, with an inherent ecological value of 50,000 HUF.

The European ground squirrel is the mammal of 2015. It is strictly protected with an inherent ecological value of 250,000 HUF.
